Addressing the criticisms:
SoU is not a critical economic infrastructure like highways, school etc. However it does play the role of binding infrastructure which has its own niche position in the economy. The monument does provide livelihood certainty and diversity of household incomes in nearby regions – economics can not be seen in isolation.
Opportunity cost of the amount invested around 2900 cr. - equal to the budget of skill development. However such comparisons amount to comparing cats and oranges. Required investments are already being made to various sectors, the issue pertains regarding right implementation. Delays and cost overruns are known to phenomena in India. Rather SoU provides iron clad resolve to get a project done in record stipulated time of 33 months. – time is more significant than height.
