FedEx, the world's first overnight delivery company, delivers more than 1.2 billion packages every year in over 220 countries.
However in its early days, it was marred with debts, losses and was on the brink of bankruptcy.
In 1971, Fred Smith founded the company with $4 million of inheritance and $80 million in loans and equity investments.
FedEx started out with eight planes, covering 35 cities, and it had plans to add more each month.
But in the first two years, primarily due to rising fuel costs, the company found itself millions of dollars in debt and on the brink of bankruptcy. Even worse, Smith's vital pitch for funding to the General Dynamics board was rejected.
FedEx's funds dwindled to just $5,000 and Smith realized that he didn't have enough to fuel the planes.

So next ? One just doesn't let things die down this easy, no matter what!

Smith impulsively flew to Las Vegas and played blackjack with the last of the company money .
Amazingly, when he came back the next week, he had turned the remaining $5,000 into $27,000 - just enough for the company to stay in operation for another week.
Rest as they say..... is history.

DUTA Protest

Those familiar with the organisational structure of Delhi University would know that the entrant teachers join the university as ad-hoc professors. However the working condition and guidelines applicable to them are highly discriminatory.
To highlight few of the situation that they have to deal with:

1. An ad-hoc’s services can be terminated without giving any reasons on a day’s notice.
2. An ad-hoc is given at least one day’s break in their teaching term every four months, so that they cannot claim seniority as the years pass (called as a break-in-service)
3. If a student asks ad-hoc for an LoR, the college might refuse to give them a letterhead
(as shared by few of the ad-hoc teachers)

With already such discriminatory and inhuman working condition, there came a surprise last month in the form of a UGC notification.

There was a government notification in May and some major highlights and analysis suggests that:

Tutorials would no longer be counted as part of the direct teaching workload, and that two practical hours would be counted as one. This would drastically reduce the total number of sanctioned posts, effectively rendering about five thousand ad-hoc, temporary, guest teachers in Delhi University jobless.

The remaining teachers would have to take double the number of courses, leading to doubling of preparation and assessment time and an inhuman and unrealistic workload.

The loss of posts would also take away employment avenues for thousands of research scholars all over the country.
The drastic increase in student / teacher ratio would also push our global rank down further, as this is one of the major criteria in ranking.

"Now this apparently bizarre decision appears to have been prompted by a 55% deduction in Government grant to our funding authority viz the University Grants Commission in the Union Budget in February this year. This, along with all the ill-conceived academic restructuring that has been going on for the last few years, is in keeping with the Government policy to shift higher education to the self-financing, private business model." writes the DUTA president in an open letter.

Hence the protest. The teachers are protesting against UGC's notification that is likely to bring down the number of teaching positions by 50 per cent. The notification also increases the assistant professors' workload from 16 hours per week to 22 hours per week.

It is a genuine concern and the entire student fraternity should come in support for their cause and request the concerned authorities to work out a rational approach and solution.
